We received a one-star review last week. Ouch. It was from a DIY customer who had received the product several years ago, and was only just now installing it. We tried to help with a sizing issue and provided options to make it work, but they were inconsolable. Well, at least this makes our reviews look more believable, so many 5-star reviews, we’re blushing ;-)
Seriously, though, Craft-Bilt is known across Canada as having quality products for your backyard. We’ve been around for over 33 years, with thousands of happy customers. This review has prompted us the write this blog, to prepare you Do-It-Yourselfers for what it’s like to install our products.
As a manufacturer supplying contractors, it was a risky decision to start selling to the Do-It-Yourself market. There is a chance that a homeowner does not understand what’s involved; maybe they think this will be like putting together IKEA furniture, but it’s not. And our installation guides are not necessarily DIY-friendly.
– You will typically be using a skill saw, miter saw, and other tools to cut and notch aluminum shapes.
– Patio covers and sunroom wall systems require aluminum flashing, which is bent with a large tool called a brake. You will need to source flashing from a local siding company or building center. If flashing is not installed properly, that will result in water issues.
– Sunrooms, patio covers and other products require sealant (caulking), which, if not applied properly, could result in water issues.
– Building permits are required for patio covers, sunrooms and the decks that they sit on.
– When you sign off on your quote or sales order, you are taking responsibility that the measurements and specifications are correct.

Our products are excellent, but how they function and look when installed is up to you, your attention to detail, and your skills as a renovator. If you do not possess good construction skills or some cursory knowledge of the building code, this may not be for you. You might want to use a local contractor that you’re familiar with. In addition, Craft-Bilt deals with many contractors across Canada who can supply and install our products.
Having said this, the overwhelming majority of DIYers who have dealt with us have done beautiful work, as can be seen in our Facebook and other social postings. DIY has been a tremendous source of 5-star reviews for Craft-Bilt.
Using a contractor has certain benefits
- They are responsible for making the right measurements, take-offs and material lists
- They have the skill and acquired knowledge to do the work properly.
- They have the specialized tools necessary to do concrete work, bend flashing, etc.
- They should be familiar with the building code and permit process.
- They will be finished quickly.
Installing yourself has other benefits
- Saves you money.
- Limit access to your property by strangers.
- Let’s you control the process.
- Gives you a deep feeling of satisfaction and pride.
