Project Details

The building is a new timber frame cottage with a steep A-frame roofline and heavy exposed beams throughout. The interior runs cathedral-height, with wood-plank ceilings and polished concrete floors. Every exterior wall is glass. The window system needed to match the scale and visual weight of the timber frame without competing with it.

Black 4-track stacking windows were installed across the full perimeter. The black frames read as a clean grid against the warm cedar and fir timbers, and each panel aligns with the spacing of the structural posts. When the windows are stacked open, the screens stay in position and the glass disappears. The room opens completely to the surrounding forest. On a still day in summer there is almost no sense of being enclosed.

The A-frame gable at the front is glazed full-height, with the triangular peak filled with fixed glass. The stacking windows run along both side walls and the rear elevation, all fitted within the timber frame bays.

Installed by Jan’s Awnings and Rollshutters in Ottawa area, Ontario. At this scale and in this setting, the window choice defines the room as much as the structure does.
