Project Details

This backyard deck was built off a main-floor walkout door, elevated above a yard that slopes down away from the house. The Sand aluminum deck runs the full width of the back of the house, giving the homeowners a continuous entertaining space right off the kitchen.

Bench seating runs along both open edges of the deck, built from the same aluminum system and finished to match. Rather than a separate railing above a bench, the bench itself sets the perimeter height, so the sightlines out to the garden stay open. Matching Sand skirting panels close off the space underneath the deck on all sides. Three staircases carry the same colour and panel match down to grade: one at each end of the deck, plus a wide central staircase leading out into the garden.

Craft-Bilt aluminum decking is manufactured in Canada and doesn’t absorb moisture the way wood does. There’s no annual staining or sealing, no warping, and no splinters. The boards are watertight across the surface, so the garden bed below stays dry and usable. Solar-powered deck lights are set into the surface along the bench line and the stairs, so the space still works after dark without extra wiring.
