Sunrooms vs Solariums
While “sunroom” and “solarium” are often used as synonyms, there can be subtle distinctions in their meanings, and no discussion of sunrooms versus solariums would be complete without addressing conservatories. While each has some unique features, there is certainly some overlap that we will discuss below.
Sunroom Definition:
A sunroom is typically designed to be a versatile and inviting space that seamlessly integrates with the existing architecture of a home. It is constructed with an abundance of side sliding windows to allow an ample amount of natural light to flood the room and to provide natural ventilation.
Sunrooms offer a unique connection to the outdoors, allowing homeowners to enjoy panoramic views of their surroundings while being protected from the elements. They serve as a tranquil retreat where one can relax, entertain guests, or indulge in various activities throughout the year, creating a serene and comfortable environment that bridges the gap between the indoors and the outdoors.
Sunroom wall styles are typically studio (also known as lean-to or shed) or A-Frame (also known as gable). Sunroom roofs are usually aluminum panels (aluminum skins bonded to a core material) but can also be translucent sheets. Sunroom roofs will have an overhang past the walls of 12 inches or so.

Solarium Definition:
A solarium, on the other hand, is often considered a more specialized type of sunroom. It is designed specifically to capture and harness solar energy, creating a space that is optimized for warmth and sunlight. Solariums are heavily glazed, including the roof.
Solariums can be unbearably hot unless some very sophisticated and expensive glass is being used. In fact, some customers will install shades above their solarium after they experience the heat.
They are commonly used for gardening, cultivating plants, or creating a greenhouse-like environment. Solarium walls will consist of mainly fixed inoperable windows with optional casement windows, and the roofs do not have an overhang.

Conservatory Definition:
We can not discuss Sunrooms vs Solariums without mentioning Conservatories. Conservatories are similar to solariums in that they typically have glass roofs and walls consisting of fixed glass with optional casement windows.
A lean-to solarium is basically the same thing as a lean-to conservatory, and a gable solarium is basically the same thing as a gable conservatory, although the conservatory version may have some decorative cresting along the ridge.
Conservatories are known for their unique shapes like: ‘P’ Shape, Edwardian and Victorian, as well as their ornamental crestings and finials.

What is the difference between Solariums and Sunrooms?
Similarities:
- Solariums and Conservatories usually have glass in the roof but could also utilize translucent polycarbonate or acrylic sheets.
- Sunrooms, solariums and conservatories can have glass or solid kneewalls.
- Sunrooms and Solariums make a wonderful addition to your home, creating extra space for family and friends. Much of the cost is recouped by the increase in the value of your home.
Differences:
- Sunrooms do not have glass roofs, often having solid roofs, and in recent years there have been translucent roof options using polycarbonate or acrylic multi-wall sheets.
- Sunrooms have an overhang past the walls; solariums and conservatories do not.
- Some solariums are available with curved glass eaves.
It’s important to note that the terminology and definitions can vary, and different regions or individuals may use the terms “sunroom” and “solarium” differently. It’s best to consult with local experts or manufacturers to get a clearer understanding of how these terms are used in a specific context or location.
